Chapter 277: Interrogation, the Crisis of Truth Spell

Chapter 277 Inquiry, The Crisis of the Truth Spell

The little skeleton dragon could speak now.

It also told Li Wei that it had awakened a unique draconic trait.

White dragon fire spewed from the little skeleton dragon's maw.

Though this dragon fire should have possessed extreme heat, it gave one a chilling sensation.

This was corrosive dragon fire capable of stripping away life itself.

A power belonging solely to undead skeleton dragons.

The white dragon fire landed on the discarded magic puppet nearby, its body rapidly corroding.

Its power was formidable.

Li Wei wore an expression of relief; the little skeleton dragon finally possessed some strength.

"Hmm, not bad."

"Continue guarding the Dragon Blood Tree."

"Yes, Master."

The little skeleton dragon lay back down in place, the soul flames in its eyes extinguished, its power dormant.

Li Wei glanced at the little skeleton dragon and shook his head instinctively.

He still wished to ride a dragon.

However, with such a tiny body, the little skeleton dragon was not quite suitable for riding.

There was none of the domineering aura of a dragon knight.

Instead, it made people feel a bit foolish.

Sensing Li Wei's thoughts, the little skeleton dragon expressed internally that it could grow up.

As long as it devoured the flesh and blood of other adult dragons, its size could grow.

Sooner or later, it too would grow into a great dragon.

The little skeleton dragon yearned for growth.

"Master, before my complete consciousness was born, I sensed a pure power belonging to the dragon race; if I could devour that power, my size could grow significantly."

The little skeleton dragon's voice rang out within Li Wei's mind.

Li Wei pondered briefly and knew what the little skeleton dragon meant.

That creature had actually set its sights on the Dragon Heart.

Naturally, Li Wei could not hand over the Dragon Heart to it.

He ignored the little skeleton dragon and turned to leave.

Li Wei suddenly felt that perhaps the Dragon Heart was not so important after all to a Legendary Lich.

Not long ago he had learned that a lich was not limited to possessing only one phylactery.

If the Dragon Heart were the Legendary Lich's sole phylactery.

It would have already found ways to reclaim the Dragon Heart.

It would not have waited until now to make a move.

The Legendary Lich clearly knew the Dragon Heart was in his hands.

The Golden Bone Ring had also been delivered into his grasp.

The Legendary Lich surely had means to lock onto his position, yet it had delayed striking against him.

Li Wei did not understand what the other party truly intended to do.

Instead, it gave him the feeling that the other party was not particularly eager to reclaim the Dragon Heart.

Compared to the Legendary Lich, Li Wei was now more worried about exposing the matter of killing Crook and Lawson.

"I must find a way to deal with the Discipline Committee's interrogation."

Li Wei thought.

The effect of the Truth Spell depended on the disparity in mental strength between the two parties.

If the caster's mental strength exceeded the target's, the target would be forced to speak the truth.

If the caster's and target's mental strengths were roughly equal, the caster could perceive truth from falsehood.

If the target's mental strength exceeded the caster's, even if the target lied, the caster might not necessarily detect it.

"My apparent strength is that of a newly advanced third-circle mage."

"Even if the Discipline Committee, just to be safe, invites a fourth-circle mental mage to examine me, I should be able to withstand it."

Li Wei's mental strength was nearly at the high end of the fourth circle.

However, he could not pin his hopes on the Discipline Committee.

After much deliberation, Li Wei came up with a plan.

It had a relatively high feasibility.

In the afternoon, law enforcement officers from the Discipline Committee found Li Wei, inviting him to the Hall of Judgment for inquiry.

"This is merely a routine inquiry, Mage Li Wei need not worry," the officer kindly explained.

After Li Wei's status changed, the attitude of the Discipline Committee members toward him shifted greatly.

Now, many knew that Li Wei was a member of the Hall of Truth.

Moreover, he held an important position within the Hall of Truth. Especially after the Vice-Master of the Hall of Truth personally arranged rescue for him.

Li Wei's reputation grew even larger.

"Hmm, what is being asked?"

Li Wei asked knowingly.

The officer said, "I am not entirely clear either; you will know when you arrive at the Hall of Judgment."

Li Wei followed the officer to the Discipline Committee's Hall of Judgment.

Entering the Hall of Judgment and seeing the judge seated above, a trace of tension flashed across Li Wei's eyes.

The person present was greater than he had imagined.

It was actually a fifth-circle mental mage.

Fortunately, he was prepared beforehand; otherwise, attempting to resist with raw mental strength would have doomed him.

Even with the Advanced Mana Control trait enhancing his mental strength.

Compared to a fifth-circle mage, there was still a significant gap.

The judge looked calmly at Li Wei and said, "Sit down, let us talk."

Li Wei sat opposite the judge, separated by three or four meters.

The Inquisitor inquired, "Why did you venture to save Sean?"

"For he is my mentor, having once aided me; I could not bear to witness his demise, and furthermore, I held confidence in returning safely."

Li Wei responded.

The Inquisitor pressed on, "Then, when you went to rescue Sean, what did you behold?"

Li Wei answered, "Upon my arrival, Master Sean was besieged by undead; I utilized magic to cleanse the vicinity, granting Master Sean time to employ a recall scroll."

The Inquisitor asked, "Did you not see others?"

Li Wei shook his head, "None."

The Inquisitor stared at Li Wei, suddenly asking, "Why is your spirit injured?"

Li Wei replied, "Issues arose during my cultivation; I inadvertently harmed my spirit."

"Is that so?" The Inquisitor made no further inquiry.

He proceeded to question regarding other matters.

Once confirming Li Wei had not encountered Crook or Lawson, the Inquisitor dismissed him.

Watching Li Wei's retreating figure from the Hall of Judgment, the Inquisitor felt a sense of unease.

Within his heart lurked a vague suspicion that the Truth Spell had failed to take hold.

Li Wei's responses appeared perfectly normal, yet they carried a hint of falsity.

Yet the Truth Spell cannot deceive.

Li Wei's spiritual power could not surpass his own; under the Truth Spell's influence, Li Wei's words must inevitably be truthful and reliable.

The Inquisitor retracted his thoughts.

Compared to such nebulous intuition, he placed greater faith in the Truth Spell.

Having left the Discipline Committee, Li Wei walked along the bustling street, slowly releasing a breath of relief.

Back within the manor, Li Wei stood before the mirror, his form gradually splitting into two identical figures.

One among them was an illusory body.

Li Wei divided half his spiritual power to reside within the illusory body.

To him, this constituted a tremendous trial.

Previously, he had only merged a small fraction of spiritual power into the illusory body.

Severing half the spiritual power, the mere process of division nearly killed Li Wei, threatening to fracture his psyche.

He must sever half the spiritual power, lest the Inquisitor detect the truth.

His spiritual power exceeded that of common mages.

After halving it, the spiritual intensity matched that of an ordinary third-rank mage.

It remained superior, yet fell within the normal spectrum.

The illusory body and the original superimposed, merging into one entity.

When the Inquisitor imposed the Truth Spell upon Li Wei, the illusory body bore the burden.

When the Inquisitor questioned, Li Wei's original body provided the answers.

The Truth Spell restricted only the illusory body.

The original body remained unrestricted.

Moreover, since both bodies possessed equal spiritual strength, the Inquisitor could not discern the difference.

He never conceived anyone's spiritual power could reach such heights.

Even so, the Inquisitor sensed Li Wei's spiritual anomaly, yet was deceived by him.

Primarily because the Inquisitor trusted the Truth Spell's efficacy too deeply.
