Chapter 76: 76 Rhaegar's Intelligence
Chapter 76: Rydal’s Intelligence
Since sending away Logner and Clamy that day, Ronin had paid no further attention to Wiggins’ affairs. Of course, even if he had wished to, there was no way to gather information; the Mountain Woods Town possessed no messenger birds to communicate with the outside world.
From that day forward, the town plunged into the intense momentum of the autumn harvest. The primary grain to be reaped this season was barley, spanning a total of over 9,300 mu.
With such a vast expanse, even if Wilson called upon every soul in the town over the age of fifteen, each person would still be responsible for an average of six mu. The workload was formidable.
Fortunately, time was on their side, and with the coordination of the various village chiefs and group leaders, the overall progress was managed well. It seemed unlikely that the grain would be left to rot in the fields.
The training of the guards continued apace. This was especially true after eighty militiamen were successively integrated into the ranks; the training grounds to the west of the castle grew livelier by the day, the air echoing with rhythmic shouts.
During this period, the various squads formed by the hundred or so slaves were also put to work.
On the hillsides partitioned next to the eastern farm, two simple wooden huts had been erected, and a few slaves had already moved inside.
Furthermore, the ironwood workshop and the blacksmith shop were gradually finding their rhythm. Even the manure collection squad had labored for a few days, noticeably clearing the town of its waste.
In the midst of this, Wilson and several village chiefs had reported instances of slaves slacking off. Toward those who consumed his food yet wished to idle away without working, Ronin showed no mercy. After a stern lesson and a missed meal or two, those individuals became far more obedient.
They came to understand that the Lord’s mercy was conditional; those who did not work diligently were unworthy of enjoying it.
As for Ronin himself, he spent this period buried in learning magic, crafting scrolls, and sparring with McCain to improve his combat experience. Beyond that, he dedicated a significant amount of time to advancing his iron-smelting techniques.
To mass-produce agricultural tools, he needed to raise the temperature to produce liquid iron.
Generally, the melting point of iron was as high as over 1,500 degrees. Attempting to melt it under existing conditions proved somewhat difficult.
