Chapter 477: I'm Not Worth It
Chapter 477: I Am Not Worth It
Park Jae-hae was, in some respects, a man with a brain. Having grown up in a rather complex and harsh environment, he had always had a keen nose for intrigue, darkness, and filth. At the very least, the moment Kim Haebin opened his mouth, he knew the man had an agenda.
It was true that Kim Haebin and he belonged to the same company, but their personal relationship was minimal. To put it more bluntly, Kim Haebin looked down on him, even despised him—how could they ever be friends? Moreover, working in the same company, he had heard more than a little about what kind of person Kim Haebin was behind the scenes.
With his character and conduct laid bare, there was no way he would help him for no reason. Even if some 'greater cause' were at stake, Park Jae-hae still wouldn't believe it.
Yet, Park Jae-hae still listened.
The method Kim Haebin proposed, though it sounded foolish, was upon careful reflection indeed his only chance to turn things around. And it had to be fast. Otherwise, once the foreign internet's opinions flooded in, or someone stepped forward, he would be completely finished.
Even if nothing else changed, with his career already declining after hitting a fan, and now being identified as the instigator of online bullying that led to a suicide, he was already doomed.
Since he was already thoroughly doomed, this foolish method was no longer foolish—it was madness!
As Kim Haebin had said, his current situation was such that one step forward might lead to boundless horizons, while standing still meant an abyss. He had to take that step, even if what lay ahead was also an abyss—it was still better than waiting to die.
He never wanted to go back to the past, and in fact, he might not even be able to return to it!
As for being used, and why Kim Haebin was using him, Park Jae-hae no longer bothered to think about it. Thinking was useless; even if he figured it out, it might just be another trouble or another abyss.
The more you know, the sooner you die—he understood that principle well.
“Shh!”
Meng Fan gestured to Lee Mi-won, who was startled at the sight of him, to keep quiet.
Clearly, his 'shh' had an effect under the power of his voice; Lee Mi-won, who had nearly screamed in extreme terror at Meng Fan's sudden appearance in her hospital room, forcibly held it in.
“You, you, how are you here?”
Lee Mi-won had never imagined that Meng Fan would appear in the hospital, and seemingly out of thin air in her own room. Though she had been in the ward since being rescued, she had some idea of what was happening outside, and that there were many reporters and onlookers beyond the door.
Even though it was night, there were surely still many people outside.
And yet, at this moment, Meng Fan appeared.
Meng Fan had already activated the live-stream assistant's smart translation function. Through his earpiece, he heard the translated words. Keeping a warm smile on his face and maintaining a certain distance from Lee Mi-won to avoid frightening her, he slowly said, following the Korean translation in his earpiece, “I came to see you.”
He first gestured what he was about to do, then pulled over a stool and sat down, speaking sincerely and earnestly: “Thank you, thank you for staying alive! If you had truly ended your life like that, I think I would have been guilty forever! Though we’ve only met briefly twice, fate is sometimes so miraculous—we have both become people in each other’s lives that can never be forgotten!”
Lee Mi-won, pale from blood loss, was stunned.
“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’ve withdrawn from the competition,” Meng Fan started a new topic, gesturing with his hand still wrapped in bandages, and smiled. “Actually, the injury from the airport isn’t serious at all, but the national team was worried that competing might worsen it, so they absolutely wouldn’t let me continue. They care about me a lot... I think, right now, there must be many people who care about you too.”
“I’ve already decided to return to China tomorrow, and I’ve bought my ticket,” Meng Fan continued. “Originally, I was just going to leave like that, but I couldn’t stop worrying about you, so I came to see you. No matter what, it’s still related to me. I wanted to come see you, and also ask if there’s anything you need my help with. I really want to help you, and I have the ability to do so, but I don’t know what way of helping would be best for you.”
Meng Fan looked at Lee Mi-won with sincere eyes—this wasn’t an act; he genuinely wanted to do something for her. Seeing that she remained silent, he had to continue speaking.
“I have many ways to make your boyfriend pay the price, and I’ve already gathered some dirt on Park Jae-hae, including how he went to your boyfriend’s school and got some classmates to help him fabricate evidence, accusing you of being an actress I hired and that your suicide was fake. Additionally, I’ve collected the personal information of everyone who attacked you online and the data on those journalists who reported irresponsibly.”
“I can avenge you, satisfy your hatred, vent your anger—I can ruin your boyfriend and Park Jae-hae, even send them to prison, and make those irresponsible reporters and media apologize. But I don’t know if you’re willing, if it would be useful to you, or if it would cause more trouble for your future life. So I came to ask you—ask if there’s anything you need my help with.”
Meng Fan stopped after speaking. Though he had read the Korean from the translation in his earpiece, it was still somewhat difficult—he couldn’t quite get used to the Korean pronunciation, and his tongue felt a bit tied and tired.
Meng Fan had said quite a lot. Though his pronunciation was occasionally odd, Lee Mi-won basically understood. As for the content, it sounded incredible, but she believed it all.
She had hated Meng Fan so much before, so of course she knew a lot about him—know your enemy and yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat. So... she could only protest at the airport. As for other things, not to mention her, even other capable people who also hated Meng Fan could do nothing.
Conversely, that meant Meng Fan was very powerful.
A person that powerful had no need to joke or deceive her at a time like this.
“No, I don’t need any help.”
Lee Mi-won raised her hand and waved it slightly, forcing a strained smile. Her lips were dry, and her voice was hoarse. Since being rescued until Meng Fan’s arrival, the total words she had spoken amounted to no more than three sentences and fewer than five characters.
Perhaps it was because Meng Fan’s sudden appearance was too unexpected, or because of the infectious power of his voice and smile, or because his words deeply moved her, or perhaps it was truly time for her to talk to someone.
“For you to come see me and say so much, I am already very surprised, very honored, and very grateful. I don’t need you to do anything for me, and I am not worth you doing anything for me. I boycotted you, I cursed you, and the things I said were very harsh. I am not worth it, really!”
