Chapter 554: Challenging One Hundred Kilometers
Chapter 554: The Challenge of One Hundred Kilometers
In the blink of an eye, three months had passed. Of Meng Fan’s current tasks, aside from the one he was unwilling to do—[Turning No One Away]—only [Swift Runner] remained unfinished; all others were completed.
Among these, the hardest to finish was undoubtedly [I Am the Champion], requiring 100 honor points. If not for participating in the Olympics, he had no idea how long it would take to complete. The achievement attribute bonus upon completion was also extremely generous: all attributes +50%. In a sense, this title pushed Meng Fan beyond the bounds of humanity.
Generally speaking, the rewards from achievement titles brought by various tasks still fell within the human realm, or at the extreme limits of it. The 50% bonus from the [I Am the Champion] title gave Meng Fan a powerful shove.
The difficulty of the [Swift Runner] task lay in the time required—it demanded a massive accumulation of running mileage to complete. Ten thousand kilometers—it sounded like just a number, but when calculated, the vast majority of people could never achieve it in a lifetime.
Meng Fan’s current mileage had accumulated to nearly 7,000 kilometers. Aside from the initial burst to 2,500 kilometers, the later 4,500 kilometers were completed incidentally—for instance, running a bit during various training sessions. He hadn’t made a deliberate effort, but his physical fitness was so monstrous that even casual running added up to a huge amount.
Recently, Meng Fan hadn’t triggered any new achievement tasks for a long time. Although he felt he no longer needed to try anything to pursue any particular attributes, he still found it somewhat dull. He even wondered if he had already exhausted the achievement system.
After much thought, Meng Fan decided he should finish [Swift Runner]. If nothing happened after that, he would have to hold his nose and complete [Turning No One Away]. Now that he had added a few points to luck, he figured he shouldn’t fear the title’s reward—[Bad Luck +1].
But this task had another reward: [Fertility +1], which made Meng Fan quite awkward. It sounded like it wasn’t simply about sexual ability, but perhaps the ability to hit the mark every time, or even hit twice in one shot.
Even so, Meng Fan and Wu Tong hadn’t yet decided to have children, since they were both still young, just out of college.
“Let’s finish [Swift Runner] first.”
The reason for this decision, aside from the system-related factors mentioned above, was mainly that Meng Fan had been somewhat idle lately. There were things to do, but they weren’t time-consuming—they were done in a flash. Also, Wu Tong had been busy with her own art exhibition and restoring paintings at the Palace Museum, leaving him somewhat bored.
With 3,000 kilometers remaining, Meng Fan planned to complete it in one month, meaning a daily mileage of 100 kilometers.
This, in fact, already far exceeded the bounds of humanity.
Forget 100 kilometers a day—even 10 kilometers a day for a month was something very few could achieve.
Even a marathon world champion or world record holder would have a monthly mileage of less than 1,000 kilometers. Meng Fan was starting at three times that.
Given Meng Fan’s current physical condition, running 100 kilometers a day was not really a problem. The issue was how long he could sustain it. Even with the most advanced running shoes, the body would still fatigue. One, two, or three days might be manageable, but ten, twenty, or thirty days would be a true challenge.
Let’s give it a try; he had nothing else to do anyway.
Meng Fan mapped out a route at home, planning to first run a full marathon to test the waters, with the main route circling West Lake.
Before starting, he posted a Weibo: “Challenge: run 100 kilometers every day. How many days do you think I can last?”
The comments instantly exploded.
“From start to finish…”
“One day, no more.”
“Iron God, are you planning to lose weight?”
“Looking forward to seeing Iron God slim down—must be handsome, right? After all, Meng Caiwei is so beautiful!”
“With that weight, can you really run that much? What about your knees?”
“Iron God, if you can’t do it, just apologize to Wu Tong. No need to run away from home.”
The comments went off track, and Meng Fan’s phone buzzed with calls and WeChat messages, mostly from coaches, team leaders, and sports bureau officials of various events.
In short, the message was: don’t lose weight easily—you’ll lose your weight class!
In any case, every move Meng Fan made now carried significant weight.
But regardless, Meng Fan started running, and he even streamed it live.
A high-tech camera followed him, allowing him to chat and interact with the viewers while running—definitely not boring!
Meng Fan’s pace wasn’t fast. For the first ten kilometers, he maintained a 5-minute-per-kilometer pace, effortlessly, with his heart rate staying around 110, essentially in a “warm-up state,” not even entering the “aerobic zone.”
For the next ten kilometers, he picked up the pace slightly to 4:45 per kilometer, and his heart rate rose to over 120.
After 20 kilometers, he had taken about 97 minutes.
For the third and fourth ten-kilometer segments, he kept the pace around 4:45.
For the last two-plus kilometers, he pushed to around 4 minutes per kilometer. Completing the full marathon, Meng Fan took 199 minutes, less than 200 minutes, or 3 hours and 19 minutes.
This time didn’t even meet the national third-level standard; it barely qualified as elite among amateur runners.
After finishing, Meng Fan posted his pace chart and time in the comments of his earlier Weibo, drawing plenty of “mockery.”
“Great news! Besides high jump, I’ve beaten Iron God in another field!” This comment from a marathon enthusiast garnered countless likes.
Then, they watched as Meng Fan stretched, took a shower—the stream was paused here—and ate a meal. An hour later, Meng Fan was running again.
Another full marathon, with a pace roughly similar to the first, slightly faster, finishing in 3 hours and 17 minutes.
The marathon enthusiasts started to panic. What about the knees? Who could withstand that?
Running two marathons in less than nine hours was something ordinary marathon enthusiasts couldn’t handle. Such stamina reserves, such knee strength—truly the Iron God!
After finishing the second full marathon, he still had nearly 16 kilometers left to complete the 100-kilometer target.
After eating, drinking, and resting for an hour, Meng Fan ran another 16 kilometers at a slightly faster pace, taking 1 hour and 13 minutes, completing the first day’s 100 kilometers. Then he ended the stream.
The whole process took less than 12 hours, with running time under 8 hours.
In terms of speed, it wasn’t impressive, but in terms of distance, it was already remarkable. Add to that Meng Fan’s weight of around 100 kilograms—well, his knees must be amazing!
Could he continue the next day with such a weight?
Even if he was the Iron God, the audience had their doubts.
