Regarding the concept of the First Sequence, longtime readers already know—this should be a story set before The Great King’s Mercy. Back then, the public account had a story called the First Sequence, but only seven short chapters. Of course, the world background was different, and the protagonist was different too. What remained the same was only the spiritual core. But back then, I always felt I couldn’t master this story, even lacking my own style, so I set it aside and wrote The Great King’s Mercy instead. Sometimes writing a story is like brewing wine—the longer the story ferments in your heart, the deeper the wine becomes. Originally, I wanted to abandon this story, but I couldn’t let it go. I picked it up again, trying to flesh it out completely. The post-apocalyptic theme is also one of the things I most want to write. … The first version of the First Sequence—actually, Li Shen Tan’s identity and background were the initial setup: a demon’s birth in the eerie psychiatric hospital atop the wasteland. Later, because the protagonist didn’t appear for many chapters, and only supporting characters were described, the first version was killed… The second version of the First Sequence had Ren Xiao Su born within the Rampart, but later I felt this couldn’t make the story more exciting. It was written more like a post-apocalyptic version of Lu Xiao Shu, so I killed it myself. By the third version, I was quite satisfied. … When writing The Great King, I barely revised it, but for the First Sequence, aside from the few chapters before and after the seven thanks, I revised continuously for three days before I was content. A few days ago, someone said I was too mediocre, and I couldn’t help it—because building a worldview is such a long process. If the foundation isn’t solid, the world won’t feel credible. It’s only natural that I update too slowly; if I updated faster, there wouldn’t be such feelings… Saying this is a bit like revealing a scar, but I believe you’re all used to it, cough cough. … Actually, I like every major supporting character in this book. Qing Zhen. Luo Lan. Xiao Yu Jie. Yan Liu Yuan. Yang Xiao Jin. Jiang Wu. Wang Fu Gui. Zhang Jing Lin. Xu Xian Chu. Even the so-called demon Li Shen Tan—I like him too. The one I like most is Chen Wu Di. What I want to say in this book is that there’s no right or wrong, only positions. It’s the struggle of these small individuals in this era, each with different personalities and desires. When you have time, give a heart to your favorite character. It’s said that once the hearts reach a certain number, they’ll celebrate their birthdays. … There are many stories I want to tell in this book. Whether to become a god or a person.
