Chapter 955: Light and Darkness (4/4)
Back then, trapped in despair, he finally recognized his fate, gave up on becoming Pol of Boulder City, abandoned his fantasies of the Silver Moon Goddess, and ceased chasing those unrealistic ideals...
It was precisely for this reason that he used the wisdom of the Boro people to deceive everyone, not only saving Little Ruby and all those in the church but also ensuring they survived until the very end.
From then on, his life went smoothly; he not only devised a plan to help his old superior Anwo escape the vortex of the Celestial Capital but also earned the admiration of big shots including Abusek, to the point where he now sits as the Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Field Army.
Even the Velantians, in admiration, printed his portrait on playing cards.
Everything was moving in a good direction.
For both the Boro and the Velantians.
Recently, communications had improved slightly, and he gradually heard news of those he had helped, learning from their letters about what was happening outside.
For instance, Mrs. Margaret and her family were said to be living happily in Settlement One.
The residents of Eternal Night Harbor were not defeated by hardship; they built a new home on the wasteland.
Her husband was still building a church for the Silver Moon Goddess to fulfill a vow, while he himself had little time for prayer.
Enclosed in the couple's letter was a postcard from Little Ruby, depicting a cute mammoth.
Thinking of that little mammoth, Isher felt a warmth in his heart and suddenly wanted a child of his own.
Perhaps he should start by finding a partner.
He was in the prime of his youth, so surely courting a female student would be no problem.
Everyone had a happy ending, but for some reason, he suddenly felt a sense of panic, just like that day when he hid in a corner unseen by Yanush, trembling.
But this time was different.
This time it felt as if the one who opened the church door was not Anwo but that demon named Yanush, staring at him, Little Ruby, and everyone with sly eyes, grinning maliciously, and already planning in his mind how to torment each person.
Isher broke out in a cold sweat and, as if hallucinating, heard something—
'I have returned.'
“Woo—!”
At that moment, an air raid siren sounded from the opposite bank of the Tasan River, ringing out three full times.
Yet for some reason, there was no explosion, nor the roar of low-flying aircraft.
It seemed not an alarm, but a mourning for something.
Isher frowned, and in an instant, many possibilities flashed through his mind, even letting his thoughts cross the Tasan River.
Just then, his face turned pale, and he abruptly lifted his head.
“We've been tricked!”
On the other side, at the train platform of West Sail Harbor, Ross, carrying a suitcase, stepped off the train with several officers under his command and saw Commander Gipson flanked by Boro soldiers on either side.
The two soldiers held submachine guns, PU-9s, with expressionless faces as if escorting a prisoner.
It seemed the Boro nation had taken over this settlement.
However, these Boro people were not rude to Gipson; they allowed him the dignity of a defeated man—something Ross had not expected.
On the platform were not only Boro but also some Velantians, but from their vigorous spirits and upright postures, they were clearly from the Eastern Empire.
They were moving crates, taking everything they could carry.
Judging by the soldiers' reactions, they had obviously been tacitly permitted by the Boro high command, even Abusek himself.
Seeing Ross alight from the train, Gipson gave a weary smile and extended his right hand.
“How have you been, Commander Ross?”
Continuous defeats had completely shattered the man's confidence; Ross couldn't help but wonder if he could ever stand firm again.
But then, what right did he have to mock him?
“Same flight?”
Gipson nodded and gave a weak smile.
“Yes, Saren promised to reunite me with my family in New West Sail Harbor. He said they need capable Velantians like us there… though I don't know what I can do now that the war is over.”
To be honest, he never thought the Boro would let him go, given that the southern front was mainly counterinsurgency, and in such operations, it was inevitable to encounter situations where civilians and soldiers were indistinguishable.
Ross was silent for a moment, then sighed and said.
“Let's go home first. There will always be a place where we are needed.”
The car to take them to the port was about to arrive.
Before getting in, Gipson cast a complicated glance back at the port.
He had no attachment to this place; after all, he wasn't here when the port was first built.
“What do you think this place will become?”
“I don't know, and I don't want to know,” Ross shook his head. “They have so many people, and they've just finished all their wars. No matter what, they can't live worse than before we came here.”
Perhaps the same was true for the Velantians.
An Eternal Night Harbor without the Southern Legion… at least Blackwater Alley would become history.
Thinking this, Ross suddenly felt less despair about the future.
