Chapter 372: Immortal Characteristics
"Do you need to consult this Immortal again?" The Immortal Fairy was more than happy to answer Lu Yang's questions.
"Go ask the other young ones from the immortal sects first, and see how much they still remember." Unhurried, the Immortal Fairy guided Lu Yang to find the root of the matter himself.
"Lan Ting, do you still remember the battle just now?"
Lan Ting rolled her eyes at Lu Yang, finding the question rather foolish. "Of course I remember. Wasn't it Senior Sister Yun Zhi showing her divine might and suppressing a cultivator of the Tribulation Transmutation Stage?"
"What about what happened before that?"
"You mean the battle between the Governor and the ancient Body Integration Stage cultivator? Didn't the Governor use..."
Lan Ting suddenly choked on her words. She felt the answer was right on the tip of her tongue, yet she could not recall it no matter how hard she tried.
What exactly did the Governor use?
Lu Yang did not probe any further. He questioned Lan Ting and got a similar result—she had forgotten about the National Destiny and the phantasm of the Supreme Sword. Turning around, he asked Yan Tianzhi, "Do you still remember Senior Sister?"
"Yun Zhi... Senior Sister, yes, I remember."
"What about the combat methods the Governor used?"
Yan Tianzhi blinked and gave a straightforward answer: "Forgotten."
"Old Meng, what about you? Is your mind still clear?"
"Nonsense! When has my mind ever been unclear? Didn't the Governor use the National Destiny to manifest the phantasm of the Supreme Sword to battle the ancient Body Integration Stage cultivator, and then Senior Sister suppressed the ancient Tribulation Transmutation Stage cultivator?"
Lu Yang fell into contemplation. Ordinary cultivators had forgotten both the National Destiny and Senior Sister. The trio including Lan Ting had forgotten the National Destiny. Only he and Meng Jingzhou remembered the entire sequence of the battle.
"The key lies in the National Destiny? The National Destiny erased everyone's memory. Meng Jingzhou hails from the Meng family, which once vied with the imperial family for rule over the world and later entered into multiple political marriages. Since Old Meng is a member of the Meng family and possesses imperial blood, is that why he can remember the National Destiny?"
"Then what about Senior Sister? She didn't want to make a scene, so she erased the memories of most people, but left the five of us untouched?" Believing he had found the answer, Lu Yang sought verification from the Immortal Fairy.
"Close enough, but not quite. The National Destiny did erase everyone's memories. However, it wasn't that Little Girl Yun chose not to erase yours, but rather that she deliberately preserved them. Do you understand the difference?"
Lu Yang lowered his head in thought. A sudden shock struck his heart, and he said in horror, "The erasure of memories by Senior Sister and the National Destiny happens automatically!"
"Correct. This is a characteristic of Immortals. It automatically causes the world to forget the methods of an Immortal, unless the Immortal deliberately allows them to remember."
"The manifestation of the National Destiny and Little Girl Yun's intervention both fall under 'Immortal methods'."
"The Governor is in charge of this region, so he won't forget the National Destiny. That fellow named Xia Qun possesses imperial blood, so he won't forget it either. The same logic applies to the lad surnamed Meng."
Suddenly, another question occurred to Lu Yang. "Wait, you spoke of Immortal methods. Does a Dao Fruit count as one?"
The Immortal Fairy was highly satisfied with the speed at which Lu Yang inferred new knowledge. "Your mind turns quite fast. As the primary characteristic of an Immortal, a Dao Fruit naturally counts as an Immortal method."
"Take Heavenly Immortal's Tribulation Dao Fruit or Time Immortal's Time Dao Fruit, for instance; both are typical Immortal methods. Even though Time Immortal practically wrote his capability into his very name, the world still cannot remember the Time Dao Fruit, nor do they know that his methods are related to time."
Immortals were mysterious, and this was one of the reasons why.
"Then how can I remember all of this?"
The Immortal Fairy said with pride, "What a question. With this Immortal shielding you, how could you possibly forget?"
"As the second-in-command of our illustrious Immortal Lineage, if you knew nothing about other Immortals, it would make people laugh at us!"
Only then did Lu Yang realize how precious the knowledge he possessed truly was.
"Of course, not all Immortals possess the trait that makes people forget their methods. This Immortal is an exception, otherwise the Immortal Sect wouldn't exist!"
The Immortal Fairy extended two fair, slender fingers.
"Based on this trait, Immortals can be divided into two categories. One consists of those whose methods are automatically forgotten by the world."
"The other category is simply this traitless Immortal here!"
"These are actually two paths, two different choices."
Lu Yang remained silent for a long time. He slowly raised his hands, clasped them in a formal salute, and said with utmost sincerity, "Fairy, you are truly magnificent!"
His serious demeanor caught the Immortal Fairy off guard instead, causing her cheeks to blush slightly and leaving her at a loss for where to put her hands and feet.
Crossing her arms, she tilted her pretty face up slightly, her small mouth pouting high. "Hmph, this Immortal told you long ago that I am magnificent, you just didn't believe it."
As she spoke, she parted her eyes a crack, secretly observing Lu Yang's reaction.
Seeing that Lu Yang still maintained that earnest expression, she grew even more flustered.
"This Immortal is going to sleep. Shoo, shoo! Don't disturb my slumber if there's nothing important!" With that, the Immortal Fairy kicked Lu Yang out of his own spiritual space.
Though it seemed the Heavenly Calamity Venerable had fled for a long time, the actual process had been brief. After Lu Yang and the other four waited in place for a short while, they saw Senior Sister returning to the Qingzhou Grand Ceremony, holding the soul of the Heavenly Calamity Venerable.
"Senior Sister, you came back so quickly?" Lu Yang was astonished. Hadn't they agreed to follow the Heavenly Calamity Venerable to locate his lair? This speed was simply excessive.
Yun Zhi: "..."
"The plan changed."
Yun Zhi was unwilling to explain further. How could she explain that the Heavenly Calamity Venerable had chosen an auspicious day poorly, running straight into four Body Integration Stage cultivators and incidentally helping her master and the Minister of Justice reduce their sentences?
"Sen... Senior Sister Yun Zhi," Lan Ting greeted timidly, not daring to look Yun Zhi in the eye.
The way Yun Zhi had displayed her terrifying power high in the heavens was truly intimidating; anyone would be frightened after witnessing it.
Yun Zhi glanced at Lan Ting and nodded slightly. "I remember you. Your master brought you to propose marriage to Lu Yang. After I agreed, your master regretted it and dragged you away."
Lan Ting fell into a long silence, utterly failing to reconcile Yun Zhi's words with that particular encounter.
"Senior Sister Yun Zhi."
"Senior Sister."
Bai Ming and Yan Tianzhi both offered tense greetings. They had never felt this nervous even when facing the patriarchs of their own sects.
"The Governor informed me that this year's Qingzhou Grand Ceremony ends here. You may arrange your own itineraries freely," Yun Zhi kindly reminded them.
She tugged at the chains in her hand. "I still need to interrogate this person, so I shall return to the sect first."
Just as Yun Zhi was about to depart, she caught sight of Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou. Remembering something, she turned to ask Lan Ting.
"By the way, how did my Junior Brother and Junior Brother Meng perform in the matches of the Qingzhou Grand Ceremony? Did they accurately critique the strengths and weaknesses of the participating cultivators?"
Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou both shuddered, cold sweat pouring down their backs.
As expected, Senior Sister had sent them here to act as judges, not to participate in the tournament.
Lan Ting thought for a brief moment, then smiled radiantly. "Senior Brother Lu Yang and Senior Brother Meng Jingzhou are role models for our younger generation. Possessing outstanding talent and rich combat experience, their critiques hit the mark precisely, cutting to the heart of the matter with every word a gem. The competing cultivators were thoroughly convinced and expressed that they would cultivate diligently upon their return."
The Senior Sister nodded. "That is good. I was worried the two of them would enter the field to compete. It is well that they did not."
Hearing Yun Zhi's words, the Immortal Fairy was no longer sleepy. She sprang up from her bed, intending to expose Lu Yang, but Lu Yang covered her mouth tightly.
