Zhao Po was startled by Ming Tai's reaction, unable to fathom why he had grown so incredibly agitated.
"Have you not heard the storytelling epic, 'Legends of the Wendao Sect — The Chapter of Lu Yang'?"
Zhao Po shook his head; of late, he had been dragged along by his Sect Master to cultivate day and night without cease, leaving him absolutely no leisure time to listen to storytellers.
"I haven't heard the tale, but I do indeed know Senior Brother Lu Yang. Why do you ask?"
"Tell me then, what exactly did Senior Brother Lu Yang do in Hanshui City? Is he truly as the legends say, possessing unparalleled martial prowess?"
"His combat strength is indeed peerless. I have a senior brother named Huang Ming, close to my own age, yet whether in natural talent for cultivation or martial genius, he left me miles behind. Only later did I learn he was an expert of the Fusion Stage from the Great Yu era, who had dispersed his cultivation to begin anew, which was why he was so formidable."
"But I didn't know it back then. It so happened that Senior Brother Lu Yang and I went out to exorcise ghosts, and we crossed paths with Huang Ming. A conflict arose between the two of them because of me, leading to a fierce clash."
"Who won?" Ming Tai asked with breathless urgency.
"Senior Brother Lu Yang, naturally. He actually traded blows with Huang Ming, who had dispersed his cultivation to rebuild, and held the absolute upper hand, handling it with effortless ease!"
"To think he is that powerful!" Ming Tai was astonished; even if he himself were to battle a cultivator rebuilding from the Fusion Stage, though he might be confident in achieving victory, doing so with effortless ease was something he could by no means accomplish.
"Indeed. Senior Brother Lu Yang and Senior Brother Meng Jingzhou both told me that their opponents begin at the Fusion Stage at the very least. Anyone below the Fusion Stage is simply unqualified to be their adversary."
"And the facts bore this out. After Huang Ming was defeated, a true Fusion Stage expert of the Great Yu appeared, seeking to slay them. Once that Great Yu Fusion Stage expert was dealt with, the Emperor of Great Yu suddenly manifested, utilizing the power of laws to shroud the entirety of Hanshui City."
Even now, recalling those events brought a lingering dread to Zhao Po; never in his life had he encountered so many high-stage cultivators, yet the moment he crossed paths with Lu Yang, every manner of demon, ghost, and monster seemed to descend all at once.
Ming Tai grew thoughtful: "No wonder. Looking at it this way, everything falls into place."
"Hey, since you say Senior Brother Lu Yang is right here in the Wendao Sect, do you think we might witness another battle of the Tribulation Transmutation Stage this time?"
Zhao Po waved his hand, feeling that Ming Tai was letting his imagination run wild: "That's impossible. What kind of place is this? This is the Wendao Sect! Even if the Emperor of Great Yu himself marched over, he wouldn't dare run amok here. Besides, with so many Elders and Sect Masters present, even if a Tribulation Transmutation expert arrived, they would have their hands full."
To witness a battle of the Tribulation Transmutation Stage once in a lifetime was already a stroke of immense luck; how could one encounter such things constantly?
Furthermore, even if one did, it ought to be after the arrival of the Great Age, not something one stumbled upon every two months.
"Shall we grab something to eat? I hear the barbecue here is absolutely exquisite."
Ming Tai held little interest in food; he believed that a cultivator should steadfastly devote themselves to their practice, and that eating was merely to satisfy the desires of the palate—an unnecessary indulgence.
However, given Zhao Po's warmth, it was awkward for him to speak too bluntly: "Go on and eat by yourself, I am not particularly fond of barbecue."
"Ah, don't say that. The barbecue here is truly delicious; you'll understand once you try it. Wait here, I'll go buy some for both of us." Zhao Po remained as enthusiastic as ever; out in the world, making one more friend meant one more path open to you.
Ming Tai wanted to say more, but he saw Zhao Po dashing away at a flying pace, heading straight for the commercial street, quickly swallowed by the bustling crowd.
He could only lower his hand and wait where he stood.
Presumably because the barbecue stall Zhao Po mentioned enjoyed too roaring a business, Ming Tai waited and waited, yet there was no sign of his return.
"Since I am just idling about, I might as well ask where Senior Brother Lu Yang is, so that when Zhao Po returns, we can go meet him together."
Just then, a young man wearing the robes characteristic of a disciple of the Wendao Sect walked past, and Ming Tai reached out to catch him.
The other party had not anticipated Ming Tai's sudden movement and was startled, nearly thinking he had run into an enemy.
"Greetings, Senior Brother. May I ask if you know where Senior Brother Lu Yang is?"
"Lu Yang?" The young man's expression turned somewhat peculiar as he scanned Ming Tai up and down. The youth before him had bright eyes and white teeth, possessing the look of a scholarly young master, yet his face was unfamiliar; they did not know each other.
"What business do you have with Lu Yang?" the young man asked guardedly.
"It is like this: I am Ming Tai of the Sword Tower. A few days ago at a teahouse, I listened to the latest rendition of 'Legends of the Wendao Sect — The Chapter of Lu Yang'. I hold Senior Brother Lu Yang in immense admiration, and wished to seize this opportunity to meet him."
"'Legends of the Wendao Sect — The Chapter of Lu Yang'?" The young man was perplexed; what sort of absurd title was that?
"What did the storytelling say?"
"The storytelling recounted that Senior Brother Lu Yang possesses extraordinary natural talent, standing as the strongest even among those with a Single Spiritual Root. He can even challenge those of higher realms, having vanquished a Soul Formation Stage cultivator back when he was merely in the Foundation Establishment Stage!"
"And once Senior Brother Lu Yang reached the Golden Core Stage, he became even more formidable. Within the imperial palace, he traded fierce blows with the four great leaders of the Immortal Sects, beating the Palace Master of the Laurel Immortal Palace until her mouth was stuffed with leaves, thrashing the Sect Master of the Prison-Suppressing Sect until he shaved his head to express his resolve to become a monk, and leaving the Abbot of the Hanging Temple utterly speechless, causing him to grow back his hair and return to secular life!"
Originally, Ming Tai had felt that the storytelling's depiction of Lu Yang was somewhat exaggerated—after all, it was a tale from the streets, so exaggeration was only natural—but just now, Zhao Po himself had said that Senior Brother Lu Yang's opponents began at the Fusion Stage at the very least.
Did this not align perfectly with the contents of the storytelling?
"The four great leaders of the Immortal Sects were soundly thrashed by Senior Brother Lu Yang, a sight witnessed by all the eunuchs in the imperial palace. The Palace Master of the Laurel Immortal Palace, the Sect Master of the Prison-Suppressing Sect, and the Sect Master of the Five Elements Sect were beaten black and blue, their injuries not even healed by the time they walked out of the palace gates!"
"His Majesty, moreover, bestowed immense praise upon Senior Brother Lu Yang's conduct, lauding him as a heroic youth of peerless talent, granting him the rare honors of entering the court without scurrying, being exempted from declaring his name during salutations, and ascending the palace hall while wearing his sword and boots!"
The young man's countenance grew increasingly bizarre. A short while ago, his master had returned to the Wendao Sect for a time. Under the guise of showing concern for the righteous path, his master had questioned him in detail about what had transpired when he went to the imperial palace for the assembly. He had recounted everything minutely, and his master had patted his shoulder with satisfaction, lamenting that he had been an irresponsible master who was often absent during his disciple's cultivation. His master then declared a firm resolve to help his disciple make a grand name for himself throughout the world, telling him to just wait and see.
Never, in his wildest dreams, could he have imagined that his fame would be spread in such a manner!
As for Qiu Jin'an and the other two being beaten black and blue, he was well aware of that. After all, it was a mess stirred up by the Immortal, and he had looked into the aftermath.
Qiu Jin'an and the other two had originally been vying for the title of the strongest Golden Core Stage, but in the heat of the fight, tempers flared, and they all restored their original cultivation realms, leaving each other battered and bruised, unable to recover for quite some time.
Ming Tai wanted to speak further, but just then, a distant chime of a bell drifted down from the summit of Tianmen Peak. It was ancient and resonant, sounding as though it had been struck an eternity ago, echoing beside the ear.
Clang— Clang— Clang—
The bell's chime reverberated through the Wendao Sect, tolling twelve times in total, symbolizing the one hundred and twenty thousand years of the Wendao Sect's history.
The tolling of the bell signified that the grand celebration was about to commence. Everyone halted their tasks and turned their gazes in unison toward the direction of Tianmen Peak.
The young man took a large stride toward the sacrificial altar.
He had been heading to the altar in the first place, only to be stopped midway by Ming Tai.
"Senior Brother, you still haven't told me where Senior Brother Lu Yang is!" Ming Tai called out in a low, urgent voice.
The disciple robes transformed into feathers of light and vanished into nothingness. Celestial silk danced beneath his feet, spreading across his entire body as a ceremonial crown, dark upper garments, embroidered lower garments, a white silk belt, and a yellow knee-apron assembled into garments of solemn and august majesty.
The young man turned his head, a smile resting within his eyes: "I am Lu Yang."
