Chapter 1107: Immortal Immortal, Battle in the Heavens!
"Heh, so there really was a mastermind behind the scenes after all..."
The left historian's shoulders quivered as laughter broke from him in fitful snatches, his head thrown back to let the pouring rain wash over his face.
Ever since achieving immortality nearly four hundred thousand years ago, he had regarded the four ancient immortals as his hypothetical enemies; when the Dynasty of the Sacred Fire collapsed, a certain indescribable malice had welled in his heart. They had sought to establish the Dynasty of the Sacred Fire, utilizing the power of faith to manufacture the Fruit of the Immortal Way, yet they had only succeeded in creating a monster like the Immortal of Extinction. This blunder had brought about the fall of the Immortal of Years and sent the other three fleeing in sheer panic—it was nothing short of divine retribution.
Thus, when he divined that the Immortal of Extinction would appear in the future, he had kept the knowledge from the four ancient immortals, harboring instead the petty amusement of a mere spectator.
Though he too was among the hunted, the thought that the four immortals shared his plight lifted his spirits considerably.
To think that from the very beginning, the mastermind had fed him a false past, rendering him paranoid and incapable of trusting a single soul.
"Truly worthy of a mastermind..."
Had he shared the results of his divination with the four ancient immortals back then, would the current situation have turned out differently?
He had schemed and calculated at every turn, but what had it ultimately gained him?
"Are you finished speaking?"
Grey Doudou inquired coldly, giving no one time to react. A grey flame, symbolizing dead silence and withering, materialized in her palm; merely burning there, it caused the very fabric of space to cave inward.
The grey flame instantly enveloped the left historian. Smoke erupted from his seven orifices as he shrieked in agony.
"Stop!" the Immortal Fairy shouted fiercely, but it was already too late. The grey flame reduced the left historian to ashes, just as it had done to the corpse of Ying Tian long ago.
"What do you think you are doing!"
Grey Doudou looked upon her other self with cold eyes. "To sever cause and effect, to approach transcendence, to wage war against the mastermind—did Ying Tian and the others not resurrect me precisely for this purpose?"
"To resolve the mastermind, I alone am enough. Your existence is superfluous."
"For that, you destroyed the entire Dynasty of the Sacred Fire?" the Immortal Fairy demanded, trembling all over, her fury completely uncontainable.
"It was a necessary price."
"It was an unnecessary price!" The Immortal Fairy's eyes welled with tears that brimmed over. A dynasty overthrown, history fractured, a hundred thousand years of heritage violently erased—just how many lives had to be sacrificed to achieve such a state?
Everything had begun because of her. What if she chose not to be resurrected, and forewent her revenge altogether?
I am not that important!
"Oh, and by the way, when Ying Tian and the others resurrected me, they also intended for me to become you." Grey Doudou shook her head and let slip a mocking sneer—a sneer at her own origins, which were so utterly laughable.
"You are not me."
"Indeed. Look at how wonderful you are. Possessing the Fruit of the Immortal Way, you fear no danger, living a carefree existence. So many people love you, yearn for you, and scheme by any means necessary to bring you back. I am merely a creature without so much as a name; how could I ever become you?"
"But if I do not become you, for what reason did I appear in this world, and how could Xiao He ever truly accept me?"
Grey Doudou's expression hardened as she glared at her true self, no longer concealing her murderous intent, spitting the words from between her teeth: "If I do not kill you, how can I ever become you!"
"I have said it before: I will surely kill you to prove that I am the real you!"
"Don't..." Qing He stepped forward anxiously to intervene, only to be frozen in place by a casual restriction flicked from Grey Doudou's hand.
Grey Doudou cast a deep glance at Qing He, no longer masking her aura. Her blood boiled as an ominous light radiated from her from head to toe, and with a great leap upward, she forcefully dispersed the clouds and rain.
The torrential downpour had begun because of them, and because of them, it now vanished.
Had it not been for the sudden interference of the left historian, Grey Doudou would have invited her to battle right after their walk along the streets, having poured her heart out to the Immortal Fairy!
Today, a struggle of life and death would certainly be settled between her and the Immortal.
"Immortal of Immortality, battle me in the heavens!"
"Come!"
The Immortal Fairy harbored an identical intent to kill. Her soul shone brilliantly, resembling an ancient light that would never perish through the ages!
...
"Is the battle of the three immortals over?" Zhu Tian asked, trembling. He was not truly seeking an answer; he was merely talking to himself out of sheer terror, as speaking aloud helped dull his fear.
Boom!
A dull, crashing sound reverberated, shaking the entire Demon City. The immortal array protecting the city shattered into pieces the very instant the impact occurred.
The commotion reminded Zhu Tian of the ancient times when the four ancient immortals would spar—scenes where meteors rained down and the stars across the sky fractured. No, this disturbance was far greater than any mere spar between immortals.
Zhu Tian was struck with dread; this was a spectacle that could actually rival that ultimate battle between the four ancient immortals and the unknown entity!
What on earth was happening? That historical battle had been the highest caliber of combat ever recorded!
Zhu Tian walked out of the imperial palace and looked up at the sky. Two beautiful figures, identical in countenance but entirely distinct in temperament, were locked in combat, each collision causing the great earth to shudder!
The scale of this duel far exceeded the battle of the three immortals from just moments ago!
Zhu Tian's mouth twitched. It was bad enough that the struggle of this great era had been triggered because of him, but did it have to take place right on his territory?
This was truly beyond his power to manage.
"Uncle Zhu Tian, what is going on?"
Jin Caiwei flew over hastily from the Qiongqi clan to ask. She had been fast asleep, only to be shaken awake directly by the commotion.
Zhu Tian belonged to the same generation as the old Qiongqi; according to seniority, Jin Caiwei had to address him as uncle.
"Look at the sky."
Jin Caiwei caught sight of the two Immortal Fairies and was equally struck with immense shock. What in the world had transpired during the period she lay unconscious?
"This won't do. The Demon City is in danger!" Jin Caiwei and Zhu Tian reached the same judgment simultaneously.
Neither the Immortal Fairy nor Grey Doudou had any desire to harm the innocent, flying as high into the heavens as they possibly could. Yet at this level of engagement, a single stray strike could cause the Demon City to fall; no array could hope to withstand it.
Zhu Tian was at his wit's end; this was nothing short of an apocalyptic disaster.
"I have a way," Jin Caiwei shouted, flying down to a lower altitude.
The battle above was a great distance away from her, but the spatial tremors caused by the fighting were felt even by her, to the point of disrupting her flight!
"Compress!"
She executed the embryonic form of her Fruit of the Flat Way, flattening the entirety of the Demon City. She then adjusted the dimensions of the plane, reducing both its length and width to a mere inch, until the grand Demon City lay resting upon Jin Caiwei's palm.
"Uncle Zhu Tian, please comfort the citizens. I will go see what the situation is!"
Zhu Tian's embryonic form of the Fruit of the Law of the Jungle could keep the citizens of the Demon City in order, ensuring that no panic ensued to cause casualties or property damage.
When Jin Caiwei compressed the Demon City into a flat plane, a few individuals remained unaffected.
Lu Yang and his companions were easy to find; a massive square pit was left at the original site of the Demon City, and only three people stood within it.
"Greetings, Senior Jin."
"Young Cult Master, what is the meaning of this?"
Unsurprisingly, the Young Cult Master was the one left unaffected.
"It cannot be explained in a few words," Lu Yang sighed.
"Sister Qing He, why are you here as well?" Jin Caiwei was exceptionally surprised to see Qing He; she had received a great deal of care from her during her childhood.
Qing He stared up at the sky, remaining silent.
"Second Chief, hurry up and call Xiao Zhi over!" Yun Mengmeng spoke anxiously. To this moment, she still had no inkling of what had transpired, or how the fighting had even begun.
What did the Dynasty of the Sacred Fire mean, and why were there two Chief Bosses?
Lu Yang shook his head, "The fairy just sent me a telepathic message, saying that since this matter began with her, it must end with her, and no one else should interfere."
