Chapter 716: Karen's Funeral! (3/4)
As if discerning Karen’s doubt, Mr. Luther explained, "This is my responsibility. The greatest honor and fortune of my life is that so many supporters are willing to follow me and heed my teachings. How could I ever abandon them? It is absolutely impossible. They, too, are the very reason for my existence."
"But when you handed that responsibility over to me before, that wasn't quite what you said."
"Before, it was because I knew I did not have much time left to exist. Now it is different. There is a class of people in this world who, no matter how exhausting life gets or how much they grumble, will grit their teeth and persevere. Only when their lives draw to a close do they truly let go and reach a settlement with themselves. I happen to belong to that category of people."
"In any case, thank you for your hard work, Mr. Luther."
"No. Though I do not know exactly what transpired, I can feel that the one who truly worked hard was you, Mr. Karen. You were the one who orchestrated all of this."
"It wasn't me. It was Order."
"Very well. I witnessed Order, and I was deeply shaken."
"It is indeed something that leaves one deeply shaken."
"Mr. Karen, you misunderstand my meaning, but that does not matter. Oh, right, do you intend to leave via that teleportation platform?"
"Yes, indeed."
"I do not believe that path is viable. The chair above our heads can..." Mr. Luther
"I... I came to see him."
"Did you bring the condolence money?"
"Hmm?" Eisen blanked for a moment, then hurriedly replied, "Yes, yes, I brought it."
"No one knew where you'd run off to again lately. Grandfather and Grandmother will be here shortly. Why don't you wait here for a bit?"
"Is that so? Oh, alright then." Mr. Eisen nodded.
Just then, the bandaged figure in the wheelchair raised a hand, gesturing for Richard to go tend to his own family.
"Are you sure you'll be alright?" Richard asked with genuine concern.
The bandaged figure shook his head.
"Alright then." Richard stepped forward on his own initiative. "Dad, I'll wait with you for Grandfather and Grandmother."
The bandaged figure pointed at Karen.
Karen stepped forward smoothly.
Richard asked curiously, "Who is this uncle?"
"Oh, a friend of mine."
Hearing this answer, Richard immediately reached out and touched his father's forehead. "Dad, you don't have a fever, do you?"
"What do you mean by that?"
"You actually have a friend, haha."
"I'm surprised you can still bring yourself to laugh."
"Laughing is a mark of respect for him. Because we know he wouldn't want to see us cry."
"Sigh, I suppose that's true."
"Today isn't just for him alone. Memorial services for others are being held as well. One of my good companions, my former deputy office director, Memphis."
"Ah, did he sacrifice himself too?"
"Yes, he was an idiot."
"Don't speak of others that way."
"There was something wrong with his head, truly. Dad, I swear, he was absolutely out of his mind. I told him to leave, but he wouldn't. Sigh, well, thankfully he died."
At this point, Richard's voice choked up slightly.
Eisen offered words of comfort, "His sacrifice was worth it."
"Yes, of course his sacrifice was worth it." Richard sniffled, forcing another smile. "It's a good thing he died, and he didn't have any children either. Otherwise, I really think his mental issues would have been passed down to his son. This saves his descendants from being ruined."
Eisen asked, "Are you coming home today?"
"Yes, I'm heading back with Grandfather and Grandmother later. What about you, Dad? Didn't you come from home?"
"After the memorial service concludes, I'll return with you."
