Chapter 184: 184, Save Yang Xiaojin

At this moment, he finally arrived beneath the building!

The rooftop sniper’s gunfire had ceased, likely because the experimental subject had reached the rooftop. Yang Xiaojin, having no choice, abandoned the sniper rifle and engaged in close combat.

Ren Xiaosu did not choose the stairs. After detaching his shadow from his body, he leaped onto the shadow’s back, watching it climb toward the rooftop with limbs splayed.

The shortest path between two points—this was no time to waste climbing stairs. Yang Xiaojin would already be dead by then!

Ren Xiaosu felt a pang of regret. If only he had fully replicated Luo Xinyu’s ability, he wouldn’t have to go through this trouble now.

When he first obtained his powers, he had asked Yan Liuyuan and Xiaoyu to buy a live chicken—not because he craved meat, but to test whether his Shadow Gate could pull others through like Luo Xinyu’s.

Yan Liuyuan’s experiments were too dangerous, so he used another animal instead.

After the attempt, Ren Xiaosu gave up. Even with a chicken as the target, he could only pull over a claw before it became immovable…

Thinking of this, Ren Xiaosu couldn’t help but feel a flicker of irritation…

Suddenly, the sound of his climbing seemed to alert the experimental subjects inside the building. Two of them smashed the seventh-floor windows and crawled out, blocking his path to the rooftop.

Ren Xiaosu frowned. “Just the two of you want to stop me? Do you know how many experimental subjects I’ve killed?”

But the two subjects hung upside down on the wall, their gazes fixed on him without flinching.

Ren Xiaosu sighed. “Fine, I see you’re not afraid…”

Before he finished speaking, the shadow suddenly launched upward with both hands and feet. Its ethereal form solidified like steel for an instant.

Mid-air, Ren Xiaosu separated from the shadow. The two—man and shadow—simultaneously drew black blades from the void, their movements perfectly synchronized.

The two experimental subjects above lunged downward, but before they could react, the black blades had already sliced through their necks!

The shadow stepped on the falling corpse, using the recoil to grasp the rebar on the wall. Its other hand tightly gripped Ren Xiaosu’s wrist!

In the blink of an eye, the two experimental subjects had not even stirred a ripple before them.

The shadow and Ren Xiaosu worked in seamless harmony, like flowing clouds and water.

Now, nothing stood between him and the rooftop. The shadow carried Ren Xiaosu in a leap upward!

On the rooftop, the experimental subjects surrounding Yang Xiaojin turned their snarling faces toward Ren Xiaosu.

Ren Xiaosu surveyed the surroundings. Seven experimental subjects—one lay motionless on the ground. Yang Xiaojin, covered in wounds and blood, leaned against the rooftop’s edge, gasping violently. She clutched a new dagger, its blade not forged from ordinary steel.

This was his first time facing so many monsters at once. Without the shadow, Ren Xiaosu would have perished here.

He met Yang Xiaojin’s puzzled gaze and said to the shadow, “Old Xu, kill them all!”

For some reason, in that moment, Ren Xiaosu felt Yang Xiaojin, though disheveled, hid a smile in her eyes.

Yang Xiaojin weakly laughed. “Xu Xianchu is already miles away.”

“Hahaha, really?” Ren Xiaosu awkwardly chuckled.

Yang Xiaojin did not argue. She slowly sank to the ground. Every wound on her body throbbed with pain, and massive blood loss left her near shock.

Ren Xiaosu spoke calmly, “Rest for a moment. I’ll get you out of here.”

“Mhm,” Yang Xiaojin softly replied.

Luo Xinyu paced frantically in the lab. Time slipped by, second by second. She had known the experimental subjects were attacking the barriers. Without her support, Yang Xiaojin was in grave danger.

But the sealed lab was filled with light sources—she had no recourse.

She had tried shooting the ceiling, only to find the glass bulletproof. She could use her coat to create a faint shadow, but she couldn’t generate enough darkness to open a Shadow Gate of that scale!

This was the difference between Luo Xinyu and Ren Xiaosu. Though his Shadow Gate could only extend an arm’s length, he could adjust its size—expand or shrink it at will!

Luo Xinyu’s Shadow Gate, however, required such vast darkness she couldn’t control it.

Suddenly, gunfire erupted outside. A voice cursed, “Hehe, there’s nothing my Luo can’t take!”

Luo Xinyu’s eyes lit up. She hadn’t expected Luo Lan to break in. If Luo Lan extinguished the light when he opened the door, she might escape through the Shadow Gate immediately!

Outside, Luo Lan’s voice boomed, “Hurry up and input the password, or I’ll blow your head off!”

It seemed Luo Lan had taken the lab staff hostage, demanding they open the lab’s gate.

A rumble echoed as the gate slowly lifted. The staff had entered the correct password, but gunfire still rang out. The terrified employee screamed, only to realize he wasn’t dead.

“You’re not killing me?” the employee stammered.

Luo Lan laughed heartily. “When have I ever gone back on my word? Your dog’s life isn’t worth my reputation. Get lost!”

As the gate rose halfway, Luo Lan ducked inside. He froze when he saw Luo Xinyu.

The lab’s shadowless lamps had gone out, and Luo Xinyu’s Shadow Gate flickered with a hazy outline.

But when Luo Lan saw this, he drew a high-powered flashlight from his waist and shone it directly on the Shadow Gate. It collapsed instantly.

He laughed wildly. “That grudge on my head isn’t settled yet, and you’re trying to steal my files and run? Lucky I brought a flashlight!”

Since being beaten by Ren Xiaosu, Luo Lan now carried a high-powered flashlight everywhere. But his words left Luo Xinyu confused. “What grudge?!”

Luo Lan didn’t waste words. “Hand over the files.”

Luo Xinyu sneered. “You think I’d trust you? Step back, or I’ll destroy the hard drive!”

Luo Lan laughed. “Your companion’s still on that building, right? The experimental subjects have already stormed in. If you don’t save her now, she won’t make it. Here’s the deal—give me the hard drive, and I’ll let you go rescue her.”

Truthfully, Luo Xinyu didn’t believe Luo Lan would let her go. But if she didn’t hurry to save Yang Xiaojin, it might already be too late.

So Luo Xinyu gambled her life!

She tossed the hard drive to Luo Lan, then stood ready.

After catching it, Luo Lan turned to leave. “Go save her. I, Luo, keep my word. If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t waste breath.”

Luo Xinyu glanced at him and immediately opened the Shadow Gate—one step, and she stood on the rooftop where Yang Xiaojin had been!

But the scene before her stunned her. The rooftop was littered with the shattered corpses of experimental subjects, and Yang Xiaojin had vanished.

Who had saved Yang Xiaojin?!

Luo Xinyu scanned the area. Gray experimental subjects darted across the ground, hunting. She worried—even if someone had rescued Yang Xiaojin, escaping the barriers now would be nearly impossible.

They must have hidden somewhere with Yang Xiaojin.
