Chapter 509: War of Gods and Demons

Chapter 509: The War Between Gods and Demons

Guthvie sat alone on the steps of the Ice Jade Palace, clutching the Frost Staff tightly in her arms.

Under the dark sky, the pale moonlight fell softly upon her solitary figure.

Li Wei stood silently not far away, watching her.

After she had calmed down, she became like this.

The Frost Staff was a scepter often used by the Snow Queen.

Guthvie tried to sense what the Snow Queen had left behind within it.

Li Wei could understand how Guthvie felt.

When one's constant support and closest person disappeared, the heart would naturally feel empty, as if the entire world had lost its meaning.

When Li Wei first arrived in this world and realized he had lost everything from his past, he had felt exactly the same way.

Now, there was nothing he could say to comfort Guthvie—only let her process her grief alone.

Li Wei gazed into the distance, his thoughts drifting like scattered fluff.

Both the Snow Queen and the Flower Goddess were seeds of faith sown by deities into the mortal realm.

But what use were such impure seeds of faith to gods?

To a god—especially the God of Light—the tiny amount of faith power emanating from the Snow Queen should have been utterly insignificant.

Then why had He come for it?

The God of Light’s followers covered the entire Sky Continent, numbering in the hundreds of millions.

How many people lived in the City of Ice and Snow?

Even with a thousand years’ worth of accumulated faith power, it probably wouldn’t equal even half a day’s faith offerings from His vast following.

More importantly, the faith power derived from the Snow Queen was impure.

Its value to the God of Light was therefore even lower.

Could it simply be that He took it because it was free for the taking?

If so, then gods wouldn’t deliberately sow seeds of faith throughout the world.

There must be some hidden reason behind it all.

For now, Li Wei couldn’t make sense of it.

Suddenly, a white line appeared at the edge of the night sky.

Li Wei narrowed his eyes, revealing a trace of curiosity and solemnity.

Who was fighting?

The scale of battle was astonishing.

Half an hour later, the sky finally changed. White light spread across the skies above the City of Ice and Snow.

A layer of ice-crystal clouds formed in the heavens, obscuring the sky. Cold currents blew down, transforming into countless snowflakes that drifted into the city.

It began to snow heavily over the City of Ice and Snow.

Li Wei walked up beside Guthvie. The falling snowflakes parted around him and landed silently on the ground.

Guthvie also rose from the steps, staff in hand, lifting her gaze toward the distant horizon.

“What… is going on?” Guthvie asked, puzzled.

The scene before her was too strange.

Snowfall out of nowhere—it was completely abnormal.

If it were about to snow, she should have sensed it beforehand.

Standing beside her, Li Wei looked into the distance and said, “This is the aftermath of a battle. Someone is fighting the Emperor of Ice.”

He had witnessed the spectacle when the Emperor of Ice unleashed his power.

It matched perfectly with what they saw now.

“The Emperor of Ice!”

Guthvie’s eyes sharpened, and an involuntary pain stirred in her chest.

If not for trying to stop the Emperor of Ice from destroying the City of Ice and Snow, they wouldn’t have performed the divine ritual, and the Snow Queen wouldn’t have vanished.

That was merely her wishful thinking.

Li Wei had told her another possibility.

Even without performing the ritual, the Snow Queen would eventually disappear someday.

That fate had been sealed since her very birth.

As she herself had said… it was destiny.

Guthvie glanced at Li Wei and said, “I want to see what’s happening.”

Li Wei replied, “I’ll go with you.”

Guthvie hesitated. “You shouldn’t go. Those people might be there.”

Li Wei chuckled lightly. “I’ll hide well—I won’t expose myself.”

“Besides, I can’t just let you go alone.”

Seeing his determination, Guthvie could only nod slightly. “Alright, be careful.”

“You too—don’t act recklessly.”

Li Wei worried that Guthvie might do something rash because of the Snow Queen.

Guthvie hummed in acknowledgment, then spread her azure-blue ice sprite wings from her back and flew off toward the distance.

Li Wei quickly kicked off the ground and leapt into the air, chasing after her.

Flying at full speed, they were swift as lightning, leaving the City of Ice and Snow behind in moments as they raced toward the distant battlefield.

Once they left the city, Li Wei’s figure vanished into thin air, leaving only Guthvie visible in the sky.

Yet Guthvie knew he was still by her side.

She gazed into the distance, her emotions churning. She didn’t know how she would face Russell, the eight-winged radiant angel who had “killed” the Snow Queen.

Though she hadn’t seen it herself, according to Li Wei, there was no doubt that Russell had indirectly caused the Snow Queen’s death.

Even if the true culprit was the god behind him.

“Stay calm.”

Li Wei’s voice whispered in her ear.

She snapped back to reality and reined in the cold aura radiating from her body.

Seeing her power beginning to spiral out of control, Li Wei had spoken up to remind her.

“You shouldn’t go,” he said. “Let me check it out instead. I’ll tell you everything that happened.”

Li Wei's figure emerged, his voice tinged with worry as he spoke.

Gusewei shook her head, her long hair dancing gracefully behind her. With firm resolve, she said, “No, I must go.”

“It’s not just for the City of Ice and Snow…”

The Ice Queen had vanished, leaving Gusewei no choice but to protect the city that the queen had been willing to sacrifice her life for.

She regarded it as her duty.

Now, with battle erupting in the distance, there was a strong likelihood it would spill over into the City of Ice and Snow. Naturally, she could not stand idly by.

Seeing that persuasion was futile, Li Wei gave up trying to dissuade her.

Gusewei still carried the Angel Feather bestowed upon her by the Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph.

As long as she refrained from initiating an attack, she should not be seen as an enemy by Russell, the Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph.

It was Li Wei who needed to be cautious about being discovered.

One of the seraph’s missions in descending to the mortal realm was to investigate the killer of the Four-Winged Angels.

As they approached the battlefield, before them lay a massive cloud of ice mist stretching hundreds of miles.

All Li Wei and Gusewei could see were dazzling flashes of light bursting intermittently from within, along with the shifting fog stirred by the shockwaves of combat.

They couldn’t make out what exactly was happening inside.

Flying into the icy mist, crystalline frost immediately formed around Gusewei.

A vague silhouette appeared within the cloud.

Li Wei’s expression subtly changed. Under such conditions, his invisibility cloak would be useless—his form would be exposed.

The temperature within the ice mist was too extreme; ice crystals and frost formed easily around objects.

His concealment was instantly compromised.

Gusewei noticed this as well. She paused and glanced at Li Wei. “You’ll stop here. Don’t come any further.”

Her gaze turned toward the depths of the misty cloud, her expression grave. “I can sense it—they’re all there.”

Li Wei raised his palm, and a tiny bird flew out, landing on Gusewei’s collar.

“I won’t go with you. Take care of yourself.”

Gusewei nodded, casting a glance at the miniature bird perched on her collar, then spread her wings and flew deeper into the ice mist.

She had witnessed Li Wei’s shapeshifting arts and knew the bird carried his spiritual essence.

Through it, they could communicate. Li Wei could also see through the bird’s eyes everything she saw.

Li Wei remained outside the ice mist, sensing the bird’s illusory form swiftly vanishing into the distance.

The ice mist cloud was immeasurably vast, stretching from earth to sky. From afar, it looked like a cloud fallen to the ground, but only upon approach could one truly grasp its enormity—a sight that inspired awe.

Li Wei calculated whether his Meteor Fireball spell could destroy such a colossal mass of ice mist.

Inside the cloud, Gusewei flew rapidly, everything around her blurred and indistinct.

The only way she could navigate was by the powerful waves of battle emanating from ahead.

Feeling those waves, Gusewei’s heart trembled involuntarily.

Never had she sensed energy so overwhelming.

She felt like an ant struggling against a raging storm.

Clutching her Frost Staff tightly, she hoped to draw courage and strength from it to continue forward.

Passing through the mist-like haze, the scene suddenly opened up before her.

At the center of the hundreds-of-miles-wide ice mist cloud was a clear void. The mist in the central area had long since been obliterated by the aftermath of battle.

Finally, Gusewei beheld the warring parties.

On one side stood Russell, the Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph, radiating holy light, his eight brilliant wings of pure radiance shining with divine brilliance.

Opposing him was Basam, a demonic apostle cloaked in black malevolent aura, with a pair of enormous, menacing bat-like wings sprouting from his back.

Beneath them loomed an immense creature—the Void Whale, Emperor of Ice.

Farther away, four paladins fought their own battles on the ground.

Their opponents were fallen practitioners who had pledged allegiance to the Outer Demigod.

Empowered by forces granted by the demigod, these individuals barely managed to hold their own against the paladins.

Currently, the paladins held the upper hand.

Russell, the Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph, and Basam, the demonic apostle, were evenly matched.

Basam had the aid of the Emperor of Ice, while Russell, as the rightful divine messenger of this world, drew strength directly from the gods.

Neither side could claim victory—it was a stalemate.

If the fight continued, defeat would surely fall to Basam, the demonic apostle.

His demonic power dwindled with each passing moment, whereas Russell showed no sign of exhaustion and could summon divine strength at will.

He stood nearly invincible.

The battle hadn’t ended yet simply because Russell didn’t wish to trouble the God of Light over such a minor matter.

Standing at the edge of the ice mist cloud, Gusewei watched the distant battle unfold, gripping her Frost Staff tightly, unsure of what to do.

It seemed Basam and the Emperor of Ice were about to lose.

To her, this was undoubtedly good news.

There was no longer any fear that the Emperor of Ice would destroy the City of Ice and Snow.

The Ice Queen’s wish had been fulfilled.

Though it wasn’t how Gusewei had originally envisioned it—

The outcome was the same.

Yet deep down, Gusewei felt a quiet dissatisfaction.

She gazed at Russell’s back, her expression solemn.

It was as if she sought to peer beyond the Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph and glimpse the intentions of the God of Light himself, far beyond the heavens.

“Aaaarrgghhh!”

Suddenly, the Emperor of Ice let out a thunderous roar that shattered the skies, shook the earth, and churned the clouds.

The Eight-Winged Celestial Seraph hesitated slightly, pausing mid-motion.

Seizing the opportunity, Basam descended, merging his lower body into the Emperor of Ice’s skull.

His power surged!
