Chapter 792: Why
Chapter 792: Why
Li Huowang sat on his bed for several hours straight, finally letting out a long breath and calming down completely.
Qian Fu was dead. He had known him the longest among all. His death filled Li Huowang with regret, but the dead could not be brought back, and thinking about him now served no purpose.
What mattered more now was what Qian Fu's death revealed about Qing Wanglai.
Li Huowang had always thought that Qing Wanglai, aside from being somewhat conceited and stubbornly believing his own ideas were always right, wasn't particularly abnormal. But clearly, he had been wrong.
Qing Wanglai was deeply off. Extremely so. The most unsettling aspect was his emotions.
In the face of someone’s death—even a close acquaintance's—his heart showed not even a flicker of concern.
Even Qian Fu's death meant less to him than his own helmet lying on the ground.
Li Huowang had never seen such a case in a psychiatric ward before. He didn’t know what illness Qing Wanglai suffered from.
Looking back now, perhaps Qing Wanglai was the one who had projected himself most thoroughly—the one closest to the image of the Fates.
A person with no emotional reaction would never act impulsively. If he could sell himself for greater gain, he wouldn’t hesitate to do it.
And when it came to companions with no value, he would abandon them without a second thought. Working with such a person was like trying to make a deal with a tiger.
Li Huowang immediately recalled what Ba Naxu had said earlier. If he had doubted everything before, now he believed half of it.
But this raised a question: if he didn’t cooperate with the Three Pure Ones, did that mean he had to fight the Fates invading Baiyu Jing alone?
One man was obviously not enough. Yet following Qing Wanglai blindly might lead him to be sold out without knowing it.
Li Huowang couldn’t help but think of the Ba siblings and that woman named Zhao Shuangdian.
Clearly, they weren’t aligned with Qing Wanglai—but they still came to help.
"Hmm... It seems there are different factions of Fates within Baiyu Jing," Li Huowang murmured to himself.
After some thought, he realized that now wasn’t the time to break ties with Qing Wanglai. He should reach out to others—those Fates who, according to Qing Wanglai, chose not to cooperate or couldn’t cooperate.
He couldn’t rely solely on Qing Wanglai’s word. Only then could he avoid being sold out.
After careful consideration, Li Huowang felt his previous reaction had been excessive. At least for now, he was allied with the Three Pure Ones.
He shouldn’t reject someone merely because they were cold-hearted. Fortunately, Qing Wanglai lacked any emotional interference. After being slapped by Yang Na, he hadn’t reacted at all—so he probably wouldn’t care about Li Huowang’s dignity either.
Thinking this through, Li Huowang took out his phone and dialed Qing Wanglai’s number. After a few rings, someone answered. “Hello? Li Huowang.”
Qing Wanglai’s voice remained as casual and familiar as ever, but Li Huowang now knew what lay beneath that tone.
“I’m sorry. I was too impulsive just now. Please pass on my apologies to Zhao Shuangdian. My girlfriend saw someone die so close to her for the first time—it upset her. So I took her away.”
“Miss Zhao isn’t the type to hold grudges. Is your girlfriend okay? As her boyfriend, you’d better comfort her well.”
“She’s fine now. Next time, I’ll have her stay home. No need to bring her along.”
As he spoke, Li Huowang glanced down at his injured hand and continued, “Today isn’t convenient. I’ll tend to my wounds later. Can we meet tomorrow? Let’s talk about your findings.”
Qing Wanglai’s expression wasn’t fake—he must have obtained very valuable information. Since Qian Fu was dead, all he could hope was that his death hadn’t been meaningless.
“Sure. How about noon tomorrow? Same place. I’ll bring Zhao Shuangdian and the others. Let them get to know you too.”
“Zhao Shuangdian…” Li Huowang frowned, recalling the woman with a single ponytail. If Qing Wanglai was one of the Three Pure Ones, what was she?
The theory of the blind men and the elephant she mentioned definitely made her one of the Fates. But which Heaven’s Path did she govern?
“Never mind. I won’t get anywhere speculating. I’ll learn more when we meet tomorrow.”
Li Huowang said this to the phone, then added, “Alright, I’ll hang up now.”
“Wait. Remember to bring your bulletproof vest tomorrow. After today’s chaos, some of the plates inside are probably damaged. You’ll need new ones.”
*Tap tap tap.* The door was knocked on.
Li Huowang held the phone between his ear and shoulder as he walked toward the door. “Then maybe let Sister Wu come by tomorrow. My injuries might cause trouble if I go to the hospital.”
As he reached the door, he turned the handle and opened it. Six tall guards stood before him, their red crosses on their chests unmistakable.
Before he could fully recognize them, they rushed in, surrounding him tightly and grabbing the restraints to throw over him.
“What are you doing?” Li Huowang tried to resist, but his injuries had greatly weakened him. He couldn’t fight back.
"Why are you arresting me? Who sent you?"
"I'm cured! The hospital gave me a certificate! Or... are you all working for them?" At the worst possibility, Li Huowang’s face turned extremely alert.
As he kept guessing who these people were, a familiar face appeared before him.
It was Yi Donglai, whom he hadn’t seen in a long time. Still dressed in his white coat, still wearing those rimless glasses. “I sent them.”
"Why?" Looking at his former attending physician, Li Huowang looked utterly confused. “Doctor Yi, I’m better! My illness is truly gone!”
“Is that so? But your girlfriend doesn’t seem to agree. She says you haven’t taken your medicine lately.”
When Li Huowang saw Yang Na standing behind the door, head bowed, he stared at her in disbelief. He let the orderlies lift him onto a stretcher and carry him toward the exit.
Just as they passed each other, Li Huowang finally asked her, trembling with anger and sorrow:
"Why?"
Yang Na suddenly burst into tears. “Because you’re going to die! This isn’t a game—it can kill people! This time it was Qian Fu. Next time, it might be you!”
“I could overlook it before! But not anymore! I’d rather you stay locked up in a psychiatric ward! I’d rather we never see each other again! I don’t want you used as a tool! I don’t want you to die!!”
